Do you have ideas, aspirations or things on your bucket list that you really want to do in life, but you have shelved it for another day? Do you work in a job that is OK, but it doesn’t light you up?
Maybe you know ‘one day’ you will make the leap to something you love and feel passionate about? Perhaps you are waiting to do or have something in your life that will allow you to be happy?
Buddha said – ‘the trouble is you think you have time’.
These words ring true when it comes to doing what you want in this short time on earth.
Weeks, months, years pass by and we can find ourselves doing the same thing but not really moving forward. As Henry Ford said, ‘when you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got’.
What will it take for you start living a life of meaning, impact, purpose and joy and doing those things you want to do before you die?
I believe being aware of your own mortality is one way you get some perspective on how precious time is. To some people, this might sound a bit morbid or depressing but it is an excellent way for you to realise how short life is and how important it is for you to start taking action in the direction of purpose.
So, here is the slightly depressing but also potentially motivating thing I wanted to share with you. I discovered that our average life span is about 27,375 days, if you are 37 you have already used up half of those days (assuming you live to a ripe old age).
It is worth calculating how many days (or weeks or months) you have left and being aware of how you want to create the rest of your life.
The best way to calculate this take your age and multiple it by 365 and then subtract it from 27,375 days.
For example, if you are 40 years old you would have 12,775 days left to live your best life. When we are familiar with our own mortality, it is like having a known deadline that you are working to (I guess that is where the word deadline comes from) – it makes us realise time is slipping by and we can’t assume we have open ticket in this life. I like to think of it as your ‘liveline’ – how much time you have to really live.
Connect with how many potential days you have left in this beautiful life and ask yourself these:
- What will I do with the days I left?
- How will I live to my full potential?
- What do I want to be remembered for?
My greatest joy is to help people make their lives more meaningful, to show them how to rise to their potential, to create a legacy and to discover how to make those years count.
